The Brunch 101 Update: A Highlight of Brittany Case
Brunch 101 made a splash in the community with it’s beautiful branding, delectable meals, and it’s effort to support local businesses. More than a few people were disappointed when the restaurant unexpectedly shuttered its doors, exiting with almost as much of a splash as it did upon entry to the community.
I’ve had hopes for someone to take over the vacant business and carry on the vision of the original owners, so when Brittany Case of CakeCakes announced she and her husband Anthony would be reopening the business, I did a happy dance! I reached out to Brittany and she graciously gave me the inside scoop about all that’s happening with their vision and new endeavor.
“We weren’t planning to be a part of Brunch 101 outside of providing bread and pastries when it first opened,” explained Brittany. “The original owners wanted my husband Anthony to be their chef, but he wasn’t willing to give up the security of his job at the time. When the restaurant fell through, I thought maybe us taking a chance on Brunch 101 was meant to be.”
Brunch 101 is slated to open the middle of March, if everything goes according to plan. “I hate giving dates because you just never know,” explained Brittany. “We were already supposed to open the beginning of this month, but hopefully we will have it done mid-March!”
Brunch 101 will have a similar menu to what it had in the beginning, but with Brittany and Anthony’s own twist. They will be serving espresso (with Tinderbox coffee beans of course) and perhaps the biggest change will be a grab-and-go fridge for those who are in a rush. “We will have easy to grab soup, sandwiches, paninis. We understand sometimes people don’t have time to wait in a busy restaurant but we want those people to have access to good food as well!” Brittany expressed.
When asked what made Brittany decide now was a good time to open Brunch 101, she responded, “I have no idea. I just do these things!” she chuckled. “I just say, yeah that sounds good, let’s do it! I don’t think we ever thought, ‘now is the right time’. But I don’t think any decision seems like the right time - you just do it.”
Conversations with the owners of Brunch 101 began shortly after it’s closure, but it took negotiations on rent as well as convincing Anthony this was the right move. “Anthony was uncertain at first. Once convinced, he planned on simply training someone to be the chef. But now he’s all in and has quit his job and will be running Brunch 101 full time,” says Brittany.
Brittany and Anthony’s vision is to eventually open a dinner restaurant and purchase a building she can run her CakeCakes business out of. But for now, Brittany says they have enough on their plate. “I’ve loved being a part of the downtown revitalization and I have amazing business neighbors!” CakeCakes just passed its five year anniversary and will likely celebrate in April. “Working for yourself is the best thing ever,” said Brittany. “If you’re thinking about it, there is no time like the present. If you think you have an idea that can sustain your family and make you happy, just do it!”
Brittany initially went to school to become a nurse before deciding to quit and open up her own bakery. She worked full time at the Casino and started baking and decorating cakes on the side, purchasing the equipment she would need to open a bakery one piece at a time. “My mom and I would bake all the time,” Brittany reflected. “My friend’s mom owned a bakery and we would spend time there after school decorating cupcakes and I had a blast. I’ve always loved baking for people, like just shove it in your mouth and let me see you smile because it’s going to be delicious!”
The name CakeCakes came from Brittany’s son who would call cupcakes, “cakecakes”. Many of the items within the bakery will be provided to Brunch 101. “Anthony has a lengthy list of baked goods that he wants from me. There will be a few staples, but primarily breakfast style baked goods, such as blueberry bread,” Brittany said.
While the spirit of the original Brunch 101 menu will remain, Anthony and Brittany are excited to bring some new items such as the Kentucky Hot Brown which is two pieces of bread served open face in a hot skillet with turkey, bacon, tomatoes and cheese sauce. Another item will be Dutch Babies with either seasonal fruit or Bananas Foster. “There will be a few menu items people might be surprised at,” Brittany winked.

It is exciting to see fresh businesses pop up in Grays Harbor that care about branding, quality of product, customer service, and a hip-atmosphere to boot!
